If I told you that, Monolith Productions and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, were working on a Batman First-Person Shooter, what would you think? Probably the first thing that will come to mind is, “Oh, there it goes, another failure coming to gaming”. Honestly, I don’t blame you, I thought the same thing. The very first time I heard that, a Batman FPS was in the works, I thought to myself, “Man…What are they doing?, They are going to ruin, what hard work has been put into the Batman Series”. Well, after seeing what Gotham City Impostors is all about, you can rest assured, Gotham City Impostors can turn out the be, a breath of fresh air, to the FPS genre (IF DONE PROPERLY).
Now, Gotham City Impostors is going to be a “Batman inspired” FPS. We aren’t going to be playing as Batman, or any traditional heroes or villains of Gotham City for that matter, but, what we are going to be, are Gotham City citizens that are either Batman, or Joker fans. I personally don’t know if there are going to be any more factions, but, characters are going to fully customizable.
You might be asking yourself, what’s the point to this whole “Batman Inspired” FPS? Well, the game is aiming to be a wacky, and an over the top FPS experience. For me personally, I enjoy these kinds of FPS, as long as the developing company delivers, I’ll be 100% on board.
Most, if not all successful FPS available on the market, are military shooters. Im ok with that, but, there isn’t any variety what so ever, with that type of FPS. When we play games like COD, we start to take the game very serious. We focus on our K/D ratio, and owning our opponents, just becomes our top priority. Soon enough, the fun gets sucked away. We are left with a game, that can anger you, simply because, it is just too damn serious. Again, there isn’t anything specifically wrong with that, but, for myself personally, I need to step away, and play a game that I won’t feel the need to rip my hair out, just because I don’t play it for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
I don’t know, and I can’t predict if Gotham City Impostors will be successful. I know the game is loaded with lots of dark humor, and, I really hope it translates onto the gameplay. This game can go one of two ways. It can be a huge success, or a big flop. The success will rely on the quality of the game. We all know, if Gotham City Impostors doesn’t run like a top of the line FPS, it won’t stand a chance in the market. Does this mean, it need to be a Call of Duty clone in order for it to be successful? HELL NO!! The truth of the matter is that, in order for it to be a quality FPS, it needs to be functional. The weapons need to feel like weapons, they need to be balanced and different. The hit detection HAS TO BE perfect. I need the game to playable, and not broken, specially at launch. It certainly needs to be fun, and addicting. It must have some sort of XP lving up system, in order to make players feel engaged.
From what has been presented so far, the game will be playable by at least eight players simultaneously. We can customize our characters costume and gadgets. The environments will be colorful with an over-the-top visual style. In addition to guns and knives, we will be able to use gadgets such as grappling hooks, glider wings, roller skates and explosives. The game will include both conventional guns and outlandish weapons, such as a grenade fashioned like a jack-in-the-box, and a rocket launcher made of PVC piping. There will be a capture the flag-style mode of the game, called “Psychological Warfare”. This involves the two teams, trying to bring a battery back to their base, and defend it long enough, for it to allow a machine to brainwash the other team.
Knowing how Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment backed up Rocksteady Studios in the development of Batman: Arkham Asylum and now Batman: Arkham City, I expect them to have quality programers and developers working on this project.
I have my eye set on Gotham City Impostors and I will be tracking its every move. More to come in the following months.
